Hello! My name is Soren Stauss, and I am currently a doctoral researcher in the Department of History at University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. My research interests examine how social movements have shaped political processes throughout the 20th century, particularly in the Vietnam War era. I'm currently doing research for my dissertation, which is on the topic of how different sectors of America and the Atlantic World, from student demonstrators to U.S. Executive Branch officials to the British Royal Family, understood and viewed politics and its connection to social movements. Thus, I am seeking to explain not only opposing viewpoints, but the commonality of social and political objectives among a diverse segment.
My current book project Nixon Revisited examines events and decisions which took place during the presidency of Richard Nixon. The book addresses foreign and domestic policy decisions, and re-examines Watergate and the management of the Vietnam War. With a focus on key issues put into historical context, I challenge conventional narratives that simply depict Nixon as a failed criminal president. The book is due for publication in 2025.
In addition to my time at UMN, I also studied history at Florida International University, and was initiated into the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity in 2022. I returned to UMN for the Spring 2023 semester. Beyond academia, I enjoy traveling the world exploring historical sites, which offers a unique and amazing perspective on my work and life.
